The meta data represents the last synchronization date (the last write date of the synchronization's master file).
The use of meta data is optional. However, when doing repeated synchronizations on the same date, meta data can be very useful. For example, if a file is found that is modified after the last synchronization date, but is not selected as the master file, overwriting it would result in a loss of the modifications in that file.
